Seeing: With a digital camera, is is possible to see what you are doing as you do it; with film, you cannot see the image until the proofs come back from the lab. The benefits of viewing images immediately are profound! It means that often, it is possible to spot blinks, poor expressions, lighting problems, and composition problems right away, and retake the image. Conversely, it means that it is often not necessary to take duplicate photographs, since you can see you already have a good one, so it saves time. Seeing the image right away also permits the use of much more creative and difficult lighting techniques which would be impossible to use in the rapidly moving environment of most weddings. Image Adjustment and Correction: Another huge benefit of the digital format is the ease and speed (and therefore inexpensiveness) of correcting images. From removing blemishes, shadows under the eyes and wrinkles, to whitening eyes and teeth, fixing peeling paint, and removing annoying exit signs, digital makes it a breeze to make adjustments that heretofore would have been difficult, costly, and sometimes not very good. We even do significant retouching before the proofs are printed. Enhances Artistic Creativity: Digital offers a whole new dimension of artistic creativity with a suite of tools designed to modify images and offer choices not previously available. These would include the ability to offer side-by-side comparisons of color, black and white, and sepia tone; selective focus and color alteration; and new ways of arranging multiple images on a page that make current album layout look old fashioned. Promotes Image Safety and Security: It is wonderfully comforting to actually see and be able to review images as they are made, and to know that the camera is operating correctly - creating the images you think it is creating. With film, there is one negative and it is vulnerable to loss, damage and decay. With digital files, it is easy and inexpensive to make duplicate backup copies and reduce the possibility of loss to practically zero. Having a backup copy of the original files is similar to have a copy of the undeveloped film, ready to be processed any time it is needed. And, of course, digital files don't decay. In most cases, Brandt Photography creates backup copies of the original files right after the wedding. At least two copies of the original files are always created. Backups are also created of the proof set, and any retouched images. |
